Protest Against Chennai Public Transport

On 20 March 2023, about 60 members belonging to various disabled groups, including MSSI Chennai Chapter, came together to protest at the Rajaratnam Stadium, Egmore Chennai. It was to highlight the fact, that Chennai public transport is not disabled friendly. The buses pose a lot of inconvenience to disabled travellers.

Organization for Rare Disease in India (ORDI)

ORDI (Organization for Rare Diseases in India) Race for 7 was held on 19 March 2023, at Island Ground, Chennai. The race was flagged off by Mr Meghanathan Reddy IAS, Secretary, Sports Development Authority, Government of Tamil Nadu, & Mrs Ann Gonsalvez, Ms Smitha Sadasivam from MSSI Chennai, Chapter.

 

Awareness Programme at MSSW COLLEGE

On 17 February 2023, the Chennai Chapter organised an Awareness Programme at MSSW College. Mrs Ann Gonsalvez, Secretary of MSSI, Chennai Chapter, took a session on Multiple Sclerosis. The session was held to create awareness about the rare disease among the students of the Master of Social Work (Disability and Empowerment) Department from the Madras School of Social Work. The awareness session was a part of the community organisation programme conducted by the Postgraduate Social Work Students from Madras School of Social Work.

India MS Day Celebrations Chennai

The India MS Day 2023 was held on 5 February 2023 at Anna Nagar Tower Park. Around 200 PwMS, caregivers & volunteers participated. The program started with a musical feast ‘Aagasam’ by the Vaazhvi team. It was a very enjoyable and refreshing evening for all. As the music played, members, PwMS, caregivers, volunteers and the general public gathered as a human chain.

The Chief Guest of the program was Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, IAS, Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation and the Guest of Honors were Mr. K P Jain, Chairman, Zone 8, Greater Chennai Corporation, Mr. MK Mohan, MLA, Anna Nagar Constituency, and Mrs. Pushpalatha, Councilor, Ward 103, Greater Chennai Corporation.

We were delighted to have them at the event. The members and PwMS clicked pictures in kiosks and selfie booths. It was followed by high tea & the celebration came to a close with the beat of song & music by the Vaazhvi team.

Christmas Celebration

MSSI Chennai chapter celebrated Christmas on Saturday 17 December 2022 at the BOSCH Office. The program started with Christmas Carols by Mr. Stanley & Band. The Christmas message was delivered by Mrs. Mercy Vishnu, PwMS & her husband Vishnu, PwMS dressed up as Santa Claus for the whole evening. He danced to music & disturbed gifts to all members and caregivers. Everyone enjoyed playing games like ‘Human Christmas Tree’ where you dress each other with decorations, representing the Christmas Tree. A game of Tombola was followed by high tea & the celebrations came close on a touching note with songs by Ms. Jothi a blind singer.

Diwali Music Fest

The best way to spread the Spirit of Diwali is through music. MSSI Chennai held a Music Fest, ‘Sing Loud for All to Hear’ on 29 October 2022. The program started with Mr Stanley & his band, and later singers Miss Thanishka, Miss Thitiksha and Miss Jyothikalai joined in and gave us the best of their singing talent. It was a soulful music fest for all members. The month of October is usually observed by the chapter as the month of Caregiver. Caregiver Awards were given to three categories (Father, Sister & Wife) and certificates were distributed to the members who had completed the ‘Fatigue Management Program’. 50 members and caretakers participated in the program. Birthday celebrations of our members were also held, followed by high tea. In the end, a box of sweets was given to all the members as a takeaway gift.

MSSI Chennai – Annual Picnic

The Annual Picnic 2022 took place on 2nd October 2022, Sunday at Joe’s Beach Resort, Mahabalipuram. 138 PwMS, caregivers & volunteers joined for the day. The bus ride for the members from the office to the venue point was enjoyable along the scenic beaches that stretched along the road. The program started with a welcome note by Mrs. Ann Gonsalvez, Hon. Secretary & some refreshing beverages. BNY Mellon volunteers conducted fun games for kids & adults. A sumptuous lunch was served which consisted of different vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. After lunch, everyone gathered near the beach and played various games, for which many prizes were handed out. This was followed by high tea. The ended with members and caretakers enjoying the beach with the help of volunteers.

MSSI Chennai – Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting for April 2021 to March 2022 took place on Saturday 27 August 2022 at the Bosch Lunch Room. The program started with a welcome speech by Mrs. Ann Gonsalvez, Hon. Secretary; she further presented the Annual Report on the activities of the Chennai Chapter. The balance sheet and income & expenditure statement for the year was presented by Mr Ashokan, Hon. Chairperson of the chapter. The accounts were passed, proposed by Mrs. Dolly Khanna and seconded by Mrs. Usha Sivakumar. A general discussion took place to decide what programme should be held to highlight the 25 years of the chapter. The programme ended with high tea with about 50 members & their caretakers.

MSSI Chennai – Face to Face Meeting

The monthly Face to Face Meeting for the month of July 2022 took place on Saturday 30 July, 2022 at the Bosch Lunch Room. The program began with a session about ayurvedic treatment and its benefits for MS by Dr. Vijayanthi from Sri Rajashymala Ayush Vaidyasala. This was followed by games conducted by BNY Mellon volunteers, birthday celebrations of members and high tea. 45 members and caretakers participated in the monthly meeting.

Press Meet | WMSD 2022

MSSI Chennai Chapter hosted a press meet on 30 May 2022 at the Chennai Press Club. Around 20 Tamil and English channels came for the meet. Dr. Bhuvaneshwari, an eminent neurologist from Kauvery Hospital gave an interview along with Mrs. Ann Gonsalvez, Hon. Secretary, Mr. Ashokan, Hon. Chairperson, and Ms. Smitha, Committee Member from MSSI about MS, risk factors, and the need for creating awareness, disability needs and much more.
