On April 30, 2026, a meaningful step toward greater awareness and support for people living with neurological conditions unfolded at Kozhikode Medical College. In collaboration with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, the Department of Neurology hosted a powerful awareness program, setting the tone for the upcoming World Multiple Sclerosis Day.

The event brought together medical experts, patients, caregivers and advocates, all united by a shared goal: to deepen understanding of conditions like Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) and MOGAD, while strengthening the support ecosystem around them.

A Promising Beginning

The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sajith Kumar, whose presence underscored the institution’s commitment to neurological care and awareness. One of the most impactful moments of the opening was the screening of a short film designed to educate the public about Multiple Sclerosis, bringing real stories and experiences to the forefront.

A Major Step Forward for Patient Care

A key highlight of the day came from Dr. Jacob George, who announced the launch of a dedicated weekly clinic for MS and related neurological disorders. Starting immediately, this specialised clinic will operate every Thursday at the Neurology Department, marking a significant advancement in accessible and focused care for patients in the region.

Knowledge, Rights and Support

The sessions that followed were both informative and empowering:

  • A team of expert doctors – Dr Sushiba, Dr. Neetha, Dr. Susha, Dr. Akhil, Dr. Haritha and Dr. Ramesh guided attendees through the symptoms, diagnosis and latest treatment approaches for these complex conditions.
  • Dr. Roshan Bijli shed light on an equally critical aspect: patient rights. His session emphasised dignity, accessibility and the importance of informed care.
  • Adding a community perspective, Ram Kumar highlighted the power of support groups in navigating life with MS. He also encouraged patients and families to register on the Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) portal to access essential government benefits.

A Community Comes Together

With over 100 patients and family members in attendance, the event reflected a growing awareness and willingness to engage, learn and support one another. The atmosphere was one of openness, where questions were welcomed, experiences were shared, and no concern felt too small.

The program concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing participants to directly connect with experts and seek clarity on their personal challenges. The event wrapped up with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sushiba, who also served as the Organising Secretary.

Moving Forward

As World MS Day approaches, this initiative by the MSSI Kerala Chapter stands as a reminder that awareness is not just about information, it’s about connection, access and action. With strengthened medical support, informed communities and empowered patients, the path ahead becomes a little more hopeful.
