Awareness Programme at Colleges

The awareness programme on Multiple Sclerosis was conducted in three colleges on various dates in the last month.

1. Loyola College, Chennai.
2. Mar Gregorius College, Chennai.
3. Dharmamurthi Rao Bhahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty’s Hindu College, Pattabiram, Chennai.

The main aim of this awareness programme was to make young students aware that there is an autoimmune disease called “Multiple Sclerosis”, also called “Crippler of the Young Adults”. Apart from that, the introduction of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Chennai Chapter, that looked after the welfare of the persons affected by it and its activities.

So far we have covered Social Work Colleges. The students actively participated during the session and leaflets were given to them to study more about this orphan disease. Many have opted to do internships with us.

Awareness Talk at Rotary Club

An awareness talk on ‘Multiple Sclerosis’ & ‘MSSI’ was given by Chairperson Meena Gupta on 22nd August 2019 at Taj Tristar, Secunderabad. This was a joint speaker meeting of 4 Rotary Clubs – RC Cantonment, RC Central, RC Deccan and RC Secunderabad East.

There were almost 60 members, and the talk with a presentation was very well received and appreciated by all. We could create awareness in a large cross-section of professionals, businessmen and people from all walks of life. Our MS person Mrs. Arti Mital shared her experience about ‘Life with MS – Visible and Invisible Symptoms’ which touched the hearts of everyone present.

Laughter Therapy

A very lively session conducted by MSSI Hyderabad Chapter on 18th August 2019.

We all gathered and laughed away our tensions and worries with Mr. Om Seth, The Laughter Yoga Therapist.

It was indeed a hilarious session where highly enthusiastic MSPS got energized enjoyed every bit and learned many laughter therapies which made one point very clear that being happy is very important.

Human race has one really effective weapon and that is laughter.

MS Youth Meeting

a Meet where everyone could be and behave how they are
without hesitation, without embarrassment, without judgement,
within a beautiful comfort zone inspiring each other, promising to be there for one another,
feeling light sharing away plight,

MS Youth Meet – was a perfect retreat
from being ‘Everyday warriors’ to ‘Cheerful partners’ and to
Reassure “We are not alone” and
Reaffirm “Together we are growing Stronger”!!

 

Session on Naturopathy

MSSI Hyderabad Chapter has viewed another interactive and informative session on NATUROPATHY – “Joy of Life depends on Health”

Dr. Bapuji Balijepalli (Naturopath) was invited for a talk on the importance of diet in managing MS. He is the first graduate of modern medicine in India and has given a Scientific approach to the system of Naturopathy. He believes “To live is not sufficient, we also need the joy of living and joy of living depends on Health”

Enthusiastic and deeply engrossed MS patients and caregivers have learned many new things like how animal protein triggers antibody production that results into autoimmune diseases.
Sinus was discussed in-depth as it is considered as a Silent Septic Focus.

Many things like (milk products, food containing colours, additives and preservatives) are forbidden to improve our health and prevent oneself from relapses.

The session has ended up with one to one discussion and vote of thanks.

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION

We, at Indore Chapter, had an amazing interaction with Dr. Passi (Neurologist) and Mrs. Renuka Malakar (MSSI National Secretary) on Sunday 28 July 2019 from 12 pm to 3 pm. Around 25+ PwMS and Caregivers attended at Hotel Lemon Tree, R.N.T. Marg, Indore. We also announced our working committee of all PwMS working for PwMS. There were also some wonderful creative ideas of fundraising and projects discussed even while having special Indorean lunch.

Face to Face programme

MSSI – Chennai Chapter monthly “Face to Face” Programme was held on 27-07-2019. The Chief Guest for the day was Dr. Alpha Khakhar practising Gynecologist, Obstetrician & Gynecologist and a Urogynecologist with an experience of 18 years.

Dr. Alpha Khakhar addressed the gathering on the topic “Multiple sclerosis and Incontinence”. She explained the connection between the brain and bladder. She also gave a case study of an actor Ms. Selma Blair an actress who is also diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and lives positively with the “will power” as an example of our MSP’s. She also explained about urinary incontinence diagnosis and assessment procedure followed by the treatment process. She spoke on Diet and nutrition to try gluten-free food. And she also focused on two important aspects i.e. exercise and stress management in that she specified the “Laughter therapy”. After the session, our CSR partners – BNY Mellon volunteers conducted games for the MS person and caregivers, followed by our MS persons Ms. Banumathy, Ms. Farzana, Ms. Gomathi birthday celebrations. Everyone had delicious Snacks and the meeting came to a happy ending.

Face to Face Program held on 22-06-2019

The Chief Guest for the day was Dr. Prithika Chary, Consultant Neurologist & Neurosurgeon and Chief Neurologist at Kauvery Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Chennai. She was the first and only lady in India to be qualified as both Neuro physician and Neurosurgeon.

Dr. Prithika Chary addressed the MS persons and their caregivers on the topic “Current treatment options for Multiple Sclerosis.” She started the session by giving a brief introduction about the MS and followed by the treatment process for the MS by explaining in detail about the Medicines available for MS and the treatment for each type of MS. She also focused on lifestyle changes, diet, nutrition, and the importance of Physical therapy ( exercise). She shared her personal life experience with Cancer, how she survived with it and how she overcame it. The session was for 1 ½ hour. Through her life sharing experiences, she created an impactful speech to our MS person which was very motivating and inspirational for them. There were around 45 MS patients and caregivers benefited from her talk. MS persons and caregivers were very attentive and participated actively by interacting with the resource person.

5 MS persons celebrated their Birthday by cutting cakes with their other MS friends singing Happy Birthday and everyone had their delicious snacks and meeting came to a happy ending.

Seeing the Unseen

To Commemorate World MS Day MSSI Bengaluru Chapter hosted a photography exhibition – Seeing the Unseen depicting the pictures of Invisible Symptoms of MS.

The Exhibition was held from 29th  to 31st May 2019 at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bengaluru which explored the voice of MS persons about their Invisible Symptoms.

Chief Guests for the event was Rotarian Suresh Hari, District Governor RMV Club, Ms. Vasanthi Hariprakash – Social media influencer & Journalist, Rotarian Rajaram & Punkaj Gupta, Hon. Secretary of MSSI, Bengaluru Chapter.

World MS Day program started with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guests Mr. Viresh Oberoi – MSSI President, Mrs. Renuka Malaker – National Hon. Secretary MSSI, Guest of Honor RJ Melodee, Mr. Mariappan, Asst. Director – Dept. of Empowerment of Differently Abled & Senior citizens, Karnataka Government. The invocation was rendered by MS person Kavita Jayaram followed by Welcome Address by Mr. Punkaj Gupta.

WMSD Representative Mr. Shankar Subramanian spoke about MSSI & WMSD. Mr. Mariappan spoke about various aspects of the Disability Act & about the implementation of UDID card in Karnataka. He also assured of his possible assistance towards MSSI from the Government end.

A panel discussion was held followed by press interaction.
